Athletic/Lifting Background: "I was (until two years) ago a cardio freak. I had never lifted a weight and was bound by the general image that I felt I had to maintain, but after one week of lifting my entire outlook toward life and perspectives changed drastically.
"I was always a prissy girl and mainly did cheerleading through school. About two years ago, I meet a guy who was into strength sports, an ex-college football player who lifted a lot. I started going to the gym with him. After one wek in the gym, I decided to do a powerlifting show for fun. I trained nine weeks, won my class and broke two Junior World Records and have been addicted ever since."
On the impact lifting has had on her life: "Lifting has made me more independant and allowed me to view the world in a much more fearless and positive light. I now have the attitude that I can reach any goal I set as long as I work hard and long enough and I know that above all I have been lent a gift that has allowed many doors to open to me and a gift that I will not waste."
On her motivation: "My power comes from my savior Jesus Christ, my motivation comes from all the nay-sayers that told me I couldnt do it and that this is a mans sport. I am not trying to step on any toes, just leave a gentle footprint in the minds of those with that attitude."
On people's reactions to her physique?: "Of course, I get many freak looks and lots of mouth and stairs outside the gym, but inside I get a lot of respect. The men and women in the gym know how hard we have to work to get anywhere and they respect and help me as I do them. Outside its a whole different world, I guess many men and women still feel that its the mans place to be big and strong and women should be submissive and petite, if this is there way of thinking I do not care, we all are entitled to our beliefs, I lift because I love it and as long as my family and friends love me for who I am not what I look like then I can handle the rest"
On doing her part to win the battle of the sexes: "When some of the new guys join the gym, they always come in and try to impress by throwing heavy weight around, and I come in and they treat me like a helpless child. Do you need help loading your weight, ect, ect. So its a competition from the start for me to earn respect with my lifting not my words or size."
"We had two new guys join about five months ago, both good size and in good shape. I was warming up on my squats with my trainer and was doing my first set of 135, the guys walked up and asked me if when I was done playing in the weight room, would I be kind enough to inform them so they could do a real leg workout. I was in the last two weeks of a training cycle for a big show and my trainer was about to go apes on these guys but I told him I had it under control and asked them if they just wanted to work in with me. They laughed and told me I would wear them out because they would have to keep unloading the plates for me to go. So I said lets just give it a go, and after my last heavy work set of 435 for a triple I told them to hold on and let me catch my breath so I could help lower the weight back down to 405 for their last set. Ever since then, they have become some of my best spotters and good friends."
What are your future goals in athletics and weight lifting? "I want to break the all-time 148lb squat record for women, its at 551 now and I want to hold all the open World records in the APA and the APF."
